Leonard dropped 30, but LA lost by 20. |
The bench came on strong, sparked by the fight from J.R. Smith in the first quarter, getting the veteran start at the 3 slot, tasked with being a consistent presence for Leonard to acknowledge. Smith would go on to score 18 points, with player of the game honors, hitting 4-6 from long range with 3 steals. Dejounte Murray's touch was off this game, but he managed 3 points (3-13, 2-2 3PT) and showed some perimeter promise.
Timofey Mosgov was a force down low, with 14 rebounds and 7 points, getting a tremendous block on George at the rim, as did Prince on Leonard and Allen on Montrez Harrell (6 points, 4 rebounds). Tucker would swipe the ball from Mo Harkless (10 points, 6 rebounds), dishing it to Allen for a big jam down low. Stauskas finished with 12, hitting a three to end the 3rd Quarter as the Spurs led 56-78. Joe Harris had 11 on a trio of deep shots.
In the 4th Quarter, Iviva Zubac's (10 points, 14 rebounds) defense was nonexistent on Dragan Bender who dropped 9 points, including 3 from long range. Allen finished with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. Taurean Prince looked good with 5 points & 5 rebounds, 1 steal & 1 block. San Antonio dominated the second quarter 25-13, to tie the game 40-all at halftime, and then erupted to win the third 38-16.
The rest:
San Antonio dropped 18 threes, to just eight by LA, recovering well after a 32% first half to finish at 46% from the field. The Spurs won the glass and bench points, by far on the latter. Lou Williams went 0-4, but may see more time early moving forward Coach Rivers said post-game. With the worries of Ingram's injury, the Spurs got this win out of the way.
