Nik Stauskas tied his career-high in Portland. |
His resurgence in Portland revealed the former Michigan star's struggle with self-doubt after being a lottery pick went awry for him, as it can for talented yet unrefined college prospects. Stauskas can be deadly from 3PT range, once making 46 three-pointers in a row back home in his academic days, stirring enough noise to nearly lure Steph Curry into a 3PT challenge before the NCAA stepped in.
"Everybody respects the Spurs organization. You know, I thought Portland was the moment my career was finally going to turn around. It was good there for a while, but then I got traded [to Cleveland for Rodney Hood]. Those worries started creeping back in, so I took the overseas offer to put my mind off things and hone my game."
The 6'6" guard will definitely help the Spurs in the shooting department, as its only reliable marksman is Joe Harris. J.R. Smith and P.J. Tucker have been a pleasant surprise from deep this season to a lesser extent, but it'll help to add a bonafide shooter like Stauskas, whose 3-PT career average is 35%, including three seasons at 40%, in the wake of trading Patty Mills to the Rockets this summer. Stauskas will wear #8, last worn by Mills, signifying the Spurs as his 8th team. Stauskas had previously played for the Kings, 76ers, Nets, Trail Blazers, Rockets, Pacers & Cavaliers.
